Running a business can be exciting. It can also get confusing very quickly.
One day you have a great idea. The next day you’re trying to figure out your prices. Then you’re thinking about marketing. Then a customer needs something. Then you have another idea. Before you know it, you’re doing a hundred things at once and you’re not really sure where all of it is taking you. That doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It might just mean your business needs a little more direction.
Here are five signs that it may be time to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
1. You’re always working, but you’re not sure if you’re making progress
You have things to do every day. You’re answering messages, working with customers, posting online, trying to make sales and dealing with all the little things that come with running a business. But when you stop and ask yourself, “What am I actually working towards?” you don’t have a clear answer. Being busy and moving forward aren’t always the same thing. Sometimes you need to pause and figure out what really matters right now.
2. You keep changing your mind about your business
Maybe you’ve changed your prices three times. Maybe you’ve changed your services. Maybe you’ve started targeting one type of customer and then switched to another. There’s nothing wrong with changing your mind. Businesses grow and things change. But if you’re constantly starting over because you’re unsure about what direction to take, you may need to get clear on what you actually want your business to become. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need somewhere to start.
3. You’re getting customers, but they’re not quite the customers you want
Getting customers is great. But sometimes the people coming to your business aren’t really the people you were hoping to reach. Maybe they don’t understand what you offer. Maybe they’re looking for something completely different. Or maybe you’re spending a lot of time trying to convince people why your business is worth choosing. This can be a sign that your business needs a little more clarity around who you’re trying to reach and what you want them to understand about you. When you’re clear about that, everything else becomes a little easier.
4. You’re making big decisions and hoping for the best
Should you increase your prices? Should you start offering something new? Should you spend money on marketing? Should you hire someone? There will always be some uncertainty when you’re running a business. That’s normal. But you shouldn’t have to make every important decision by guessing. Sometimes the best thing you can do is step back, look at what’s actually happening in your business, understand your customers and think about what you want the next few months to look like. You may find that the answer becomes much clearer.
5. You know where you want to go, but you don’t know how to get there
This one is probably the biggest sign of all. You have a vision. You know what you want your business to become. You can see the bigger picture in your head. You just don’t know what to do next. That’s where strategy can really help. You don’t need a complicated plan. You need to understand where you are now, where you want to go and what needs to happen between the two. Sometimes clarity is what gets things moving again.
Sometimes you just need someone to sit with you, look at what’s happening and help you make sense of it. That’s part of what we hope to do for you at Ventures Brief.
